Reginald G. "Bud" Phelps Obituary (1932 - 2017)

Reginald G. "Bud" Phelps, 85, passed away from complications of COPD on April 25, 2017. Bud was born in 1932 in Gibbon, Nebraska and attended the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture High School in Curtis, Nebraska from which he graduated in 1949. A veteran of the United States Navy, Bud served our country from 1951-1955 with a detachment unit on the USS Valley Forge. Bud married Patricia Kelly on August 13th, 1955 and was a dedicated husband throughout 61 years of marriage. He attended the University of Denver and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Bud's subsequent career as a comptroller spanned approximately 50 years. His first position was at Price-Waterhouse. Other career highlights include working as comptroller for the Jolly Rancher Candy Company, being part owner, president, and comptroller of Kelly Well Company in Grand Island, Nebraska, and holding the position of CEO and Director of National and International Sales at 3-D Investment, Inc. in Doniphan, Nebraska. Having never truly retired, Bud taught practical accounting at Southeast Community College and found the time to author 8 books with topics that vary from practical accounting to works of historical fiction. Bud was an active member of the Cornhusker Kiwanis Club and regularly attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Bud was also an avid Denver Broncos and University of Nebraska football and volleyball fan. Everyone who met Bud liked him, and all who knew Bud loved him deeply and dearly. His endlessly positive outlook on life and strong faith in Jesus Christ were the character qualities he was known for. Bud is survived by Patricia, his wife of 61 years; daughters and sons-in law Bridget and Don Farrall, Shauna and Mike Groenewold, and Wendy and Mike O'Connor. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kelly Kiihne and her husband Albert "Vinny" Kiihne, Cory Farrall, Kalyn Groenewold, and Andrew O'Connor. Greatgrandchildren include Hunter Kiihne and Brayden Kiihne.A Memorial Service for Bud will be held at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 5200 R Street on Saturday, 4/29/17 at 10:30am. Memorials to the family (to be designated at a later time) and flowers are welcome.
