Ty Kieu

–

Lincoln, Nebraska

Ty Van Kieu, of Lincoln, NE, passed away on May 23, 2021, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Long An, Vietnam, Ty's life was devoted to his studies in dharma, gardening, and bringing laughter and joy to all those who knew him. He was born the youngest child among eight children and is survived by his wife, Nghen Pham; daughters, Tuyet Kieu and Tram Kieu; son, Thien Kieu; daughter-in-law, Yen-Nhi Nguyen; and grandson, Benjamin Kieu.
From humble beginnings having lived in a temple at an early age, a decorated military captain in the South Vietnamese army to a prisoner of war, a hardworking, proud American citizen to jubilant grandfather; Ty lived a unique and full life that many would find awe-inspiring if not extraordinary.
Ty and his wife left their ancestral home as political refugees to start a new chapter in their lives making Lincoln, Nebraska, their home for the past 28 years. Fulfilling a lifelong goal, they created a vision of their own American Dream. One that was centered around hope, freedom, opportunity, grit, and sacrifice.
Warmhearted, calm, and reflective -- those who met him would say his character was almost Buddha-like. His hobbies included gardening, reading up on current events, and the occasional game of solitaire.
Ty was 81 years old when he passed. Strong-willed and brave, he fought a fearless battle with cancer. His lightheartedness and candor will be missed by many, but will forever live on in our fondest memories.
On behalf of Ty's final wishes, he has requested that any memorial gifts that are made in his honor go towards the Linh Quang Buddhist Center (3175 W Pleasant Hill Rd, Lincoln, NE 68523).
